Adult Ministries: Learning

Purpose

To provide the adult Christian at Jacksonville Chapel with opportunities to join with others in growing as Christians, learning the Bible, and acquiring skills for discipling others in the faith.

This is a step-by-step process. First, it is essential that we have Christ at the core of our lives so that the Bible can be read with the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit. And once we begin to understand the Bible, we can better minister to and strengthen the body of believers.

Develop Your Relationships With God and His People

Our adult Sunday morning program offers two kinds of learning experiences. The first offers classes for adults with similar life settings: nearly and newly married, unmarried adults, adults with teenage children, etc.). Our hope is to provide a place where each adult can grow in his or her knowledge of Scripture, in understanding how to better live as a Christian, and to nurture friendships and relationships with others who are in a similar life setting…a place where an adult can feel that Jacksonville Chapel is a "place to belong."

The second kind of class is an adult elective class. In this setting, adults of all ages share a mutual interest in a common subject. The goal is to address a personal need or interest by mastering the subject matter of the class. These electives are offered throughout the year and are six to eight weeks in length.

We Learn Best with Others

As adults, we learn best when we learn in-group settings rather than by ourselves. At its core, the Christian life is relational--first with Jesus, and then that love for Him expresses itself in the way we interact with each other (1 John 5:1).

One driving reason for long-term church attendance is meaningful relationships, not just cognitive learning. True, doctrine is vital, but unless we're sure we're being loved by others, we may not come back no matter how well the pastor preaches. Cults often shower people with love and affection. Shouldn't we as possessors of Christ's love, and His truth, offer that much more love and hope to those who are searching?

The Dynamic of the Christian Body

It's amazing how a Christian can become such a force for Christ when he's been edified by his brothers and sisters in the faith. That's what our friendships are all about. We enjoy each other, but we also use our time together to build each other up. God raises up leaders through the prayers and encouragement of those we call our friends.
