Sermon Questions for 1 Timothy 6:1-10

 I wanted to eliminate fears or confusion over these sermon based questions. On February 28th we will begin a new series on Luke 15. During that time, these sermon based questions will be available. Some groups will be using Tim Keller’s “Prodigal God” curriculum.  Either one is acceptable.  Thank you for following along with the sermon series.  If you have feedback, please let David Fuquay know at ';h112718957='jacksonvillechapel.org';document.write('' + linktext + '');

SPECIFIC PRAYER  (suggestions)

Pray for each other in the group, about hidden idols and the things we place before God. Pray for repentance for intentional sins this past week.  Pray that you will be connected enough to Christ to do things beyond your own strength, like toppling your idols.

SCRIPTURE AND SHARING

Crawl:

What did you want to be when you grew up?  What happened along the way?

What goals are you working towards right now? Individually? Family? Spiritually?  Are these goals in danger of becoming idols? How do you ensure they do not?

Walk:

Read 1 Timothy 6:1-2

In America we place freedom almost as an inalienable right. How does God view our version of freedom? Would He agree? How would He define freedom?

According to these verses, how are we suppose to work, no matter what our position?  How does this apply to your work situation?

What do you think the key elements of Christianity are?[1]  How do these work against our nature?

Since we are free, how should we be using our freedom (see Gal 5:13)?

How can you be a better servant at your job? Marriage? Kids?  Parents or family members?

What should your attitude be during service? How do you maintain the right attitude?

Read 1 Timothy 3-5

How do you spot a false teacher?

Does the teaching you receive help to make you more godly?  Show more love? Do you express the fruit of the spirit?  Why or why not?

Why is the false teaching of following God and serving God as a way of getting rich such a seductive teaching? (2 Peter 2:17-22)

Read 1 Timothy 6-10

Can you finish this next sentence? “If I only had _____, I would be happy/content.”  Is there a difference between happiness and contentment?

What is the root of all evil?[2]

In what areas is Christ making you into a person who is beyond your own strength?

Run:

How are you using God? Would you like to repent of that now?

Have you given your life so completely to Christ that He has taken your cravings and turned them into joys of service? If so, how did that happen? If not, how can you make that happen?

Key Words and Further Study:

“Idol,” anything you put in the place of God.

In the first century during Roman Empire, it is estimated that a third to a half of the population were slaves.

SERVICE (fodder for ideas)

On the third Thursday of each month there is a seniors group that meets at Jacksonville Chapel. If anyone is interested in sharing  their talents such as music, a collection, a demonstration, experiences etc…, we would love to hear from you. These meetings feature fellowship, friendship, refreshments and a program of interest to the seniors. One recent example was a woman who shared her experience of running with the Olympic Torch during a recent Olympics. You can contact Louise Denos at

Nxt-Gen is looking for some props for the Nxt-Gen Winter Retreat.  We’re looking for some old clocks: any kind and any type. If you have any that you were planning on throwing out you can drop them off in the Nxt-Gen Office. (they don’t even have to work)

[1] Surrender and submission to Christ.

[2] Make sure you point out it’s the LOVE OF money.  Its our desires and cravings leading us away from Christ that are evil.
