SCRIPTURE AND SHARING

Crawl:

Do you know anybody who hates “organized religion?” Why do they hate it? What could change their mind/heart? Should you even attempt to change their minds when Jesus wants a relationship not a religion?

In Ryan’s sermon he said: “Submission to Jesus, without submission to God’s word is not submission to Jesus at all but simply allegiance to a man-made God, and a rejection of Jesus.” What does true submission look like?  How do we achieve it?  Is this a one-time event or an ongoing decision?

Walk:

Read 1 Timothy 5:17-18

What is the first thing we owe pastors?  What is the second? How are you doing with both?[1]

Read Hebrews 13:17, which calls the people of the church to follow their leaders. How is your followership?  What could you do to improve your followership?  Is there anything you could do to make leading YOU easier? Why not do it?

What could pastors do to labor better? What could they do to serve you better that is not being done right now?  How would this help?  Are pastors doing what needs to be done at Jacksonville Chapel? (Send suggestions to )

Have you ever thought about how agonizing and hard work preaching and teaching must be for someone who loves people and has a deep reverence for God’s Word?

Why would Paul quote the Old Testament (Deut 25:4) about oxen to demonstrate his point?

What would his readers have thought? How is the ox like a pastor (be nice)?  An ox was a working animal while pets are merely companions. Are you treating your pastor better or worse than your pets?

Do you think those who take a vow of poverty and serve the Lord fulltime have a higher calling then those who do not? Why would some religious institutions place the expectation of poverty onto their servants?  What are the benefits? Drawbacks?  Is that Biblical?

Read 1 Timothy 5:19-21

What is it about leadership that points a target on their backs?

Why does Paul require two or three witnesses to bring an accusation against a pastor/elder?

Why does Paul say that a pastor/elder who falls into sin should be publically rebuked?  Is that practical today? Is this for all sins or a certain class/type of sin?  Who does this help?

Read 1 Timothy 5:22-25

What does leadership look like in a strong church?  Is this idealistic, realistic, or authentic?

Run:

Do you feel like you are sacrificially giving to God’s mission in North Jersey?

Can you imagine how the reputation of the church would be different if we followed 1 Timothy 5:19-21?  What stops us?

Key Words and Further Study:

In the New Testament, you find three terms that really mean the same thing: “overseer,” “elder,” and “pastor.” These three terms are used interchangeably for the people who oversee and lead and pastor the church.

The Greek word that’s translated “rule” is a word that means to lead or have authority or stand before.

Read and discuss 1 Peter 5:1-4

SERVICE (fodder for ideas)

How can we as a group serve the leaders, Elders, Pastors, and, most importantly, the lay volunteers of this church?

[1] Respect is #1, and a salary from your tithe is #2.
